RE: Handy Hints, Gadgets, Products & Gizmos

For dog owners: Garmin Astro GPS
Good idea, but don't most parks and campgrounds have leash rules? I mean that would be good for dry camping out away from everyone but if you go to a park or CG your dog shouldn't need GPS.
Maybe you can put the same idea on a belt for kids though!

RE: On The Road To Alaska

FMOS,
Simmons is good people - we bought our fifth wheel from them and they have taken care of us since. We had some small issues with our fiver here in Fairbanks and Simmons called up a dealer here in town and told them to take care of us and they did.
I can recommend Simmons for your work. For parts and supplies, A&M on 5th Ave is about the best in town. There isn't a whole lot to choose from in RV accessories in Alaska...you just have to shop around. And if it's something not really really common, you'll have to go to CW to get it.
Sounds like you got bit by the Alaska bug big-time! Don't feel bad, it happens to a lot of folks. One thing about this country...you either love it and can't live anywhere else, or you hate it and can't get out of Alaska fast enough!

RE: Sad Day...

We are fighting it here. We may try to go just to a local campground next weekend just to get everything cleaned up inside and ready to winterize. I am afraid this will be a long winter too, but we are moving next summer, so we have plenty to keep us busy this winter.
Yes it is going to be a long winter. But planning your "escape" should occupy some of that time!
We would love to go Outside for a vacation but with only vacation time to do it in, travelling that far by land just takes too long to get anywhere! And with all the craziness nowadays in flying...well there is still a lot of Alaska left to explore!
Maybe someday we'll see America again.

RE: On The Road To Alaska

Well now that everyone seems to be southbound, I just wanted to take a moment and thank everyone that came up to Alaska this year. I met several of you (loggenrock, robanddi, and a few others) and it was very nice talking with you. I do hope everyone got lots of pics and had a great time up here.
Looking forward to meeting more RV.net members next year for anyone planning the trip in '09.
So when do we start the "Who's Going to Alaska in 2009?" thread! LOL!

Sad Day...

Well, the time has come once again to put the Cougar away for the winter. Took her to the local RV shop for her winterization and now she is nestled all snug in her covered storage for her winter's nap.
We had fun with her this year taking her out more than we normally do, and we have big plans for next summer's outings as well. But it will have to wait.
Gonna be a long winter...mind if I live vicariously through some of you Southerners for awhile?

RE: Handy Hints, Gadgets, Products & Gizmos

I use the bubble wrap that the pans were wrapped in when I bought them. Works great and no $$$. Any bubble wrap would work fine.
And since you didn't throw the bubble wrap in the garbage and add to our landfill problem, it's eco-friendly!! LOL! Go Green!:B

RE: costly mistake. 5 wheelers please read.

Here's yet another reason for the Bedsaver...and another "It Happened to Me" story.
One of our last trips we had made it all the way to the RV park successfully and as we were unhitching I forgot to chock the wheels first off and even though the sites looked perfectly level front to back we were on an ever-so-slight incline and when I pulled the handle to release the jaws the fiver started slowly rolling backwards...almost to the point of the front legs coming off the blocks! We were very fortunate that it stopped in time but it was a very scary few seconds! We just knew the rig was coming off those blocks and gonna drop onto the truck! We had backed safely away but the truck almost got it!
Now we will remember to chock the wheels of the trailer before ever even turning off the truck. The Bedsaver - if we had one - would have caught the fifth wheel if it had gone any further. It is high on our list of what to buy next and hopefully we can get one soon!

RE: Handy Hints, Gadgets, Products & Gizmos

I have a question for all of you -
Anyone figure out if there is a "sturdier" screen door you can buy? Made of ???
Our cat likes to lean on the screen, and it pops open. I figure there must be a better "handle" mechinism (?)
Also thought of screwing in some type of latch on inside and out.
Any thoughts?
Hello Illusion,
I would think a simple barrel bolt latch would do the trick. Just mount it on the inside of the door and that should keep Kitty indoors!

RE: What is important when looking for a campground?

Well Silverado, our list may be different than others but with one autistic boy, one ADHD daughter, and a legally-blind DW, I have to be somewhat choosy in my RV parks.
I look for pull through, full hook-up sites, clean bathrooms, level easy-walking grounds, and room to walk around safely.
Safety and convenience are my main priorities...everything else can be worked out.
But we do go out and we have a lot of fun when we do.

RE: Need info on Alaskan halibut

Well Nascar, I know that halibut cheeks are supposed to be the best part of the halibut and all my fishing friends make a fuss over them. Frankly I can't see the big deal though. I love all halibut and can't get enough of it.
As the the person in charge thing, the best policy is to set the rules and conditions BEFORE you set sail so everyone knows what to expect.

RE: Handy Hints, Gadgets, Products & Gizmos

Here's one for people with small children. When we put our 2-year old down for nap or bedtime, he likes to peek out through the curtain to see what is going on outside. We stick two of the suction cups with hooks above and to either side of the window on the outside of the trailer. We then hang a bath towel across the hooks whenever he is in bed. It also darkens the room which is better at nap time.
Heck that might even work for us "older children" at our nap time too! LOL!

RE: Handy Hints, Gadgets, Products & Gizmos

I have rolls of:
masking tape, duct tape, electrical tape, electromagnetic wire, insulated wire, painters tape, packing tape, scotch tape, and velcro.
We carry only two kinds of tape - blue painters tape (doesn't leave any residue) and rescue tape www.rescuetape.com
This stuff is great and takes the place of just about all others. We use it for electrical, plumbing, and other "emergency" uses!
Oh we do use Velcro too but we don't carry any extra - only what is needed for a specific use

RE: Bear Paw or Eagle's Rest??

We stayed at the Sea Otter facing the small boat inlet and looking across the sound to the pipeline terminal. This was in 2005, maybe it is no longer there.
Don
Don, Sea Otter RV Park is still there however, at the time we were there, it was all but empty. I understand they were having power issues and that plus the reduced tourist industry this year made Sea Otter park virtually empty - only a dozen or so rigs there.

I have heard some pretty good things about ThermaCell devices and I was thinking about trying them - but our RVing season is about over now so it will have to wait till next year. But you might give them a try.

RE: Bear Paw or Eagle's Rest??

Well I may be a bit prejudice, but we have always stayed at Eagle's Rest since the first time we went to Valdez.
The people there are great and the facilities are clean and well-cared for. They can help you with anything you need from help with a flat tire (our first trip) to charter fishing, to help booking a tour.
You are right next to the grocery store and a block away from the small boat harbor so everything is convenient.
There is even a place out back to park your toad or boat if you have one. And when we were there a couple weeks ago there was plenty of room and it was really nice to be able to "stretch out". The wifi and TV works in all sites too.
Eagle's Rest gets top ratings in our book!

RE: Driving in the Snow/Cold Weather

Boy lesmore49, you sure bring back memories with this post! My Mom had an old original bug back in the 70's and she tooled around Fairbanks in it. She loved the car but with three teenagers, it got a wee bit tight inside! And I also remember those frost shields - you're right, they haven't been seen in years! It was a real trick to get them to seal properly so they would do their job...more often than not they were a waste of time!
As far as a ragtop bug for cold weather, well there are other more practical cars for that. I don't know that ANY convertible is a cold weather car but then when I talk about "cold weather" it has a whole different meaning than Ohio!

RE: "Must see" / "must do" in Fairbanks?

Steam Boat and go on to North Pole and see Santa's House (short drive).
All in all, Fairbanks is VERY DISAPPOINTING. Nasty old dirty shanty town.
MikeSorry that Alaska didn't fit your bill with all upscale homes. Try putting your home in -60 deg weather for 4 months every year and let's see how you and it holds up. I think that Fairbanks is a very nice city with some very wonderful people.
Thank you, Texan and JUrban. I'll grant you Fairbanks (and Alaska for that matter) may not be everyone's cup of tea, but that's no reason to dump on someone's home town. I am sure there are places that I wouldn't consider a vacation jewel either. And for those places I just don't consider going back to them.
This is America and everyone has a right to their opinion, but remember it's YOUR opinion. I happen to love Alaska and Fairbanks.
